Muddy Buddies (also known as Puppy Chow) are a classic treat that people of all ages enjoy. However, this version is strictly for adults, and we're confident you'll agree it's even better than the original. Satisfy your sweet tooth and relax with these delectable Muddy Buddies edibles.
How to Make Fool Proof Muddy Buddy Edibles at Home
To make our Muddy Buddies recipe, you'll first need to make hemp-infused butter. If you have ever made hemp infusions by hand, you know that it can be a time-consuming and messy process. Many hemp enthusiasts prefer to make their own edibles because store-bought products can contain questionable ingredients and additives. However, manually drying and infusing herbs is hard work, and the results aren't guaranteed to be consistent every time.
That inconsistency is why we recommend using a LĒVO home infusion machine to make easy infusions for your edible making. LĒVO devices are designed to streamline the infusion process by activating, decarbing, and infusing herbs for you at the touch of a button. While the LĒVO creates your infusion, you can focus on gathering the other ingredients you'll need to make Muddy Buddies and completing other tasks.
The LĒVO product line includes the LĒVO II, the LĒVO C, and the LĒVO Lux. The LĒVO II is great for personal use at home, while the LĒVO C, which has four times the capacity of the LĒVO II, is preferred by business owners who make infusions for commercial purposes. The LĒVO Lux is our most elegant and intelligent model to date and is the perfect accent for any kitchen.
Before you begin concocting your delicious Muddy Buddy edibles, you will need to make a hemp-infused butter. Making hemp butter is the easiest way to infuse your Muddy Buddies. It is super easy to infuse butter with a LĒVO device.
You only need 16 ounces (four sticks) of butter and the hemp of your choice to make your infusion. Make sure the herbs are coarsely ground; if they're too fine, they could seep out of the LĒVO herb pod. Once you have your ingredients, pack the herb into the pod that comes with your LĒVO device, place the four sticks of butter in the LĒVO reservoir with the silicone stirrer, and close the lid.
Set the temperature to 160-175° and infuse the butter for 30-120 minutes, depending on the type of herb you're using. Check out our online calculator to ensure you have the right time and temperature settings. Once the infusion is complete, place it in a glass jar or airtight container until you are ready to make your Puppy Chow.
Once your infused butter has been prepared, it's time to make your Muddy Buddies! This recipe is ridiculously simple and only uses six core ingredients. But mixed together, those ingredients pack a serious punch in more ways than one!
Ingredients
8 cups of Chex cereal of your choice (we prefer rice, but chocolate, cinnamon, wheat, and corn also work just fine, depending on your preference)
½ cup peanut butter
1 cup chocolate chips
¼ cup hemp-infused butter
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup nuts or chocolate candies like Reese's Pieces or M&Ms (optional)
Place a layer of parchment paper atop a large baking sheet and set aside.
Place a bain-marie or makeshift double boiler on the stove and turn the heat to medium-high. Heat the water in the bottom pot. When the water is sufficiently hot, spoon peanut butter into the pot on top and pour in the chocolate chips.
Stir the mixture together as it heats until it is smooth.
Next, add the hemp-infused butter and the vanilla extract. Stir until the ingredients are fully incorporated into the mixture.
Remove from heat and pour the mixture into the bowl with the Chex cereal. Use a spatula to ensure all the Chex are coated. Add optional ingredients of your choosing.
Move the mixture into a large freezer bag. Add in the powdered sugar and shake the bag until the mixture is well-coated.
Transfer the Chex mixture to the parchment-covered pan and spread it evenly. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature for at least one hour and ten minutes. The mixture will remain fresh at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to seven days.
Recipe Note
Substitutions
Other rice cereals - While this recipe calls for Chex cereal, other rice cereals, such as Crispix, can also be used! There are also numerous types of Chex cereal that you can use. The rice and corn Chex cereals are both gluten-free.
Other types of chocolate - For this recipe, we suggest using dark or semi-sweet chocolate chips. However, any chocolate will do, including white chocolate. Using milk chocolate will make the recipe sweeter, but if that's how you prefer it, go for it!
Other nut butters - For people who are allergic to peanut butter, any nut butter can be used as a substitute, including sunflower, almond, hazelnut, or cashew butter.
Freezing
If you don't plan on eating the Muddy Buddies right away or you end up with leftovers, you can freeze the edibles for up to two months. Just pour the batch into an airtight container and place it in the freezer so you can enjoy it later.
Shelf-life
Muddy Buddies will stay fresh for at least seven days if stored correctly in an airtight container. However, if you love these treats as much as we do here at LĒVO, there may not be any left by then.
