To kick off 4/20 weekend, Mennlay Golokeh Aggrey, set flower enthusiasts up for success with her take on the high holiday classic–vegan panditas gummy bears. As we reach the top of May, Mennlay also passed along a creamy horchata recipe that you can make at home with your LEVO just in time for Cinco de Mayo!
Mennlay tells us more about this flower-infused drink below.
In my research of Afro Latinx history, I was shook to find out that Horchata, the drink we know and love––often associated with Mexico––originated in Africa. The dairy-free drink traveled from African to Spain during the Muslim conquest, because, colonizers. After which, records of horchata popped up in Valencia during the 13th-century. In West African countries such as Nigeria and Mali, it is known as kunnu aya, where tiger seeds are commonly used, similar to horchata in El Salvador. But other than it’s historical attributions, what I love is that it’s a dairy free rice drink that’s incredibly easy to make. I incorporated a #LevoMade coconut oil infusion to give it a nutty earthy flavor, but you can also use cannabis milk if that suits you best.
Pro tip: soak rice overnight so you can wake up, blend it up, and mix it in with your morning coffee, matcha, or tea.
